Social media platforms have various size dimensions for images. How can we create great images in the correct sizes for the social media platforms we use to reach our clients—without having to memorize size charts for each?

Facebook cover images are 851x315 pixels. The profile photo is 168x168 pixels, but people only see 160x160 pixels. Twitter header images are 1500x500 pixels; the profile or logo pic is 400x400 pixels. If this sounds like too much information—and there has to be a better way—I have good news:

There are numerous choices when creating images for your platforms, and they’re free to use unless you upgrade.

Let’s look at some time- and sanity-saving options.

Tip 1: PICMONKEY is a free application. (You can also purchase the premium product.) PicMonkey is a user-friendly application with a short learning curve time. I can easily upload an image. PicMonkey lays out the design for the social network I’m working in. I add text and my watermark to create a beautiful image to upload to my social networks.

Tip 2: SNAGIT is a quick-fix application. After I’ve created an image in PicMonkey, I open it in Snagit and resize it for additional social media use. If I created the image in PicMonkey for a Facebook post, I can open the image in Snagit and resize it for a Twitter tweet.

Tip 3: CANVA opens up a lot of possibilities when creating your own graphics to share on social sites. Similar to PicMonkey, you can create Facebook cover images, Facebook posts, and Twitter images. You can also add stock photography at $1 an image. If you’ve checked out stock photography in the past, you’ll find Canva is a reasonable alternative. Canva has added a feature that creates multiple images (simultaneously) for Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The feature saves valuable time, but is a pay-to-play option.

Tip 4: FLIPGRAM takes your pictures and creates short videos set to music. After setting the account, you’ll be able to access images from your Facebook and Instagram camera gallery, and other applications you have on your smartphone. Once you select your pictures, you can edit images, add a title, and attach music. The music can be yours, or Flipgram will offer choices. A benefit I enjoy is that you decide on the video length—either Flipgram (30 seconds) or Instagram (15 seconds). After you’ve created your masterpiece, you can share it with the sites listed in the accompanying image.

Keep in mind: Social networks are consistently changing their images sizes. Using apps, as mentioned above, will help take the guesswork out of the image size you need to post!
